Resettlement Archives

The long-term research project “Resettlement Archives” consists of different sub-projects on the subject of resettlement that in the foreseeable future are to be brought together in a publication of the same name. The territorial focus of the first three projects is Egypt, Morocco and Indonesia; where the first two sub-projects are now completed. In the meantime, these were made accessible to the public within the context of two exhibitions: at the 2012 Swiss Art Award exhibition in Basel and at a Zurich architecture gallery Architekturforum in 2013. The first project, exhibited in Basel, is concerned with perhaps the most famous resettlement project of modern architecture, the village of New Gourna near Luxor designed by the Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy. The second project, exhibited in Zurich, is concerned with a settlement that was built by a pair of Swiss architects, Jean Hentsch and André Studer, during the urban expansion of Casablanca in late period of the French protectorate. Both projects were made in the 1950s. Both exhibitions rest upon architectural and artistic research that attempts to capture the specificity and ambiguity of a culture of the resettled.
