A Breath of Fresh Air. Enlarging the Scope of Thermal Knowledge in Cairo's Residential Architecture

By directing a special focus on cities, microclimate ethnography takes the growing significance of cities and urbanization processes into account. Multi-sited ethnography and multiscale approaches are ways to adequately examine the different levels of urban microclimates. According to Aidan Southall, it is the task of urban ethnography to build bridges between the microsphere and the macrosphere ; or, with respect to our topic, between the microclimates of a room, the mesoclimate of a city, and the global macroclimate (Abb.). Microclimates are both transnational as well as local phenomena. Microclimate ethnographies contribute to a project I would call “comparative planetary studies” in climate control.
